The land far away from civilization, hidden from an outside world. The place where medieval fortress villages guard the secrets of valleys because most of the living houses are abandoned by people ages ago. The place where you can get closer to the interesting history of Khevsurs – people who believed in pagan deities. A land of unique songs, cuisine, incredible nature and proud people who despite intensive depopulation were able to preserve their own identity. Definitely worth to visit and to feel the mystery of Khevsureti.

1 Day. The charm of Tbilisi

Our evening recommendation – relaxing in ancient sulfuric baths which were beloved of literature classics Aleksander Pushkin and Aleksander Duma. There is a saying – if you haven’t been in Tbilisi baths means you haven’t been in Tbilisi. You can order a pot of tea or…massage and have a good time with your friends in a separate bath room (1 hour per room costs about 20-50 EUR).

  • Overnight in Tbilisi.

2 Day. Heading to the mountains.

  • Breakfast. Excursions on the day:
  • Up to the mountains stop at Barisakho village – the largest village of Khevsureti with a population of about 200. It contains the municipality hall, school, hospital, post office and other institutions.
  • Korsha Etnographical Museum which tells the story about Khevsurs life.
  • Lunch-picnic in a picturesque place at Datvis Jvari Pass – the highest point of the route (2677 m).
  • Kistani and Lebaiskari abandoned villages with tower-houses.
  • Arrival to Shatili – the main sight in Khevsureti village.
  • Dinner and overnight at guest house in Shatili.

3 Day. Exploring the life of abandoned mountainous villages.

  • Breakfast at guest house. Excursions of the day:
  • Shatili sightseeing.
  • Anatori village. It’s a dead village, where nobody is living.
  • Mutso village. Ruined fortress village of Mutso is straight out of a fantasy movie. Located on rocky hill at 1880 m above sea level, it has about thirty towers (about 300 years old) and dozens of dead lonely houses, left alone after earthquakes. The towers are connected to each other by a warren of walls, roofs, stairs and ladders. Many of the restored towers offer access to the wide wooden balconies that look out over the valley. Rehabilitation works are due to start at the site soon.
  • Lunch-picnic.
  • Ardoti village. In this village lives only one family. Here you can see ruins of ancient churches.
  • Heading to Gudani village. Dinner and overnight at guest house in Gudani.

4 Day. Eco tour through the beautiful Khevsureti landscapes.

  • Breakfast at guest house.
  • Transfer to Roshka village.
  • Walking to Abudelauri lakes. It’s a tough rocky climb along narrow paths to reach these three lakes – one blue, one green, one white, but well worth the effort. It was here, according to local legend, that pagan deity Iakhsar defeated an evil ogre, whose tears formed the three lakes.
  • Lunch-picnic.
  • Heading back to Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi.
