Tour Description

The land far away from civilisation, hidden from an outside world. The place where medieval fortress villages guard the secrets of valleys because most of the living houses are abandoned by people ages ago. The place where you can get closer to the interesting history of Khevsurs – people who believed in pagan deities. A land of unique songs, cuisine, incredible nature and proud people who despite intensive depopulation were able to preserve their own identity. Definitely worth to visit and to feel the mystery of Khevsureti.

Itinerary

Day 1. The charm of Tbilisi

Meeting at Tbilisi International airport, transfer to hotel, check-in. Tbilisi walking tour: Sameba Cathedral, Metekhi church, Rike Park, Peace bridge, cable way to Narikala Fortress, Tbilisi mosque, Abanotubani – sulphur baths district, Sioni church. Wine tasting at one of the oldest wine cellars in Tbilisi. In the evening – dinner at local Georgian restaurant with Georgian folk dances and music show. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Day 2. Heading to the mountains

After breakfast head to the mountainous Khevsureti region. First stop at Barisakho village – the largest village of Khevsureti with a population of about 200. It contains the municipality hall, school, hospital, post office and other institutions. Visit to Korsha Etnographical Museum which tells the story about Khevsurs life. Lunch-picnic in a picturesque place at Datvis Jvari Pass – the highest point of the route (2677 m). Drive through Kistani and Lebaiskari abandoned villages and finally arrive to Shatili – the main sight in Khevsureti. Dinner and overnight at guesthouse in Shatili.

Day 3. Exploring the life of abandoned mountainous villages

After breakfast at guesthouse drive and hike through Khevsureti region, exploring interesting nature and local people life: Shatili, abandoned Anatori village, ghostly Mutso – ruined fortress village of Mutso is straight out of a fantasy movie. Located on rocky hill at 1880 m above sea level, it has about thirty towers (about 300 years old) and dozens of abandoned houses, left alone after earthquakes. The towers are connected to each other by a warren of walls, roofs, stairs and ladders. Many of the restored towers offer access to the wide wooden balconies that look out over the valley. Lunch-picnic. Walk through Ardoti village with only one family living in here. Dinner and overnight at guesthouse.

Day 4. Eco tour through the beautiful Khevsureti landscapes

After breakfast drive to Roshka village, trek to spectacular Abudelauri lakes. Although it’s a tough rocky climb along narrow paths to reach these three lakes – one blue, one green, one white – but it totally worth the effort. According to local legend, pagan deity Iakhsar defeated an evil ogre and his tears formed the three lakes of amazing beauty. Lunch-picnic. Head back to Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Day 5. From the mountains to the land of wine

After breakfast drive to Kakheti region – the cradle of wine. Visit to local Wine House in Kakhetian village where you will learn about Georgian wine history and making process while visiting Wine museum, taste local wines and have traditional lunch from fresh local products. After lunch head to Sighnaghi, on the way stop at Gremi architectural monument – the complex is what has survived from the once flourishing town of Gremi when it functioned as a lively trading town on the Silk Road and Nekresi Monastery, located on the tophill with an amazing views to Alazani valley. Arrival to Sighnaghi – small amazing town, called Kakhetian pearl and city of love. Late in the evening back to Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Day 6. Ancient capital and amazing churches

After breakfast drive to Jvari monastery (UNESCO), located on the hill with an amazing views to two rivers – Mtkvari and Aragvi – confluence and Mtskheta town. Drive down for excursion in Mtskheta (UNESCO) – ancient capital of Georgian Iberia Kingdom and the most religious city of Georgia as it is the place where Christianity in Georgia takes its origin and here is located one of the most important churches in all of the Georgia – Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Back to Tbilisi, free time to explore capital city. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Our evening recommendation – relax in ancient sulfuric once beloved by literature classics Aleksander Pushkin and Aleksander Duma. There is a saying – if you haven’t been in Tbilisi baths means you haven’t been in Tbilisi. You can order a pot of tea or…massage and have a good time with your friends in a separate bath room (1 hour per room costs about 20-50 EUR).

Day 7. Good bye and hope to see you soon!

Transfer to Airport with wish to come back 😉
