Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival

Meeting at Tbilisi International airport, transfer to hotel, check-in. Tbilisi walking tour: Sameba Cathedral, Metekhi church, Rike Park, Peace bridge, cable way to Narikala Fortress, Tbilisi mosque, Abanotubani – sulphur baths district, Sioni church. Wine tasting at one of the oldest wine cellars in Tbilisi. In the evening – dinner at local Georgian restaurant with Georgian folk dances and music show. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Day 2. Kakheti - the land of wine!

After breakfast head to Kakheti – the region of wine. On the way drive to David Gareja monastery enjoying impressive desert-like landscape. Excursion at complex founded in 6th century of one of Asyrian Fathers, named David Garejeli. The complex includes hundreds of cells, churches, chapels, refectories and living quarters hollowed out of the rock face. Before entering Sighnaghi srop Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino – the female evangelist of 4th century, whose relics are shrined here. Arrival to Sighnaghi – small amazing town, called Kakhetian pearl and city of love. Sightseeing and Wine tasting at winery ”Pheasant’s tears”. This winery is founded by American practicing painter John H Wurdeman V. The idea to start this company was born from a passion for Georgian culture and heritage. Here you will taste 7 sort of wines from different grape varieties and, of course, hear an interesting story how wine and Pheasant‘s tears are related. Overnight in Sighnaghi.

Day 3. More of wine in Kakheti region

After breakfast visit the most impressive historical objects of Kakheti region: Nekresi Monastery, located on the tophill with an amazing views to Alazani valley Gremi architectural monument – the complex is what has survived from the once flourishing town of Gremi when it functioned as a lively trading town on the Silk Road.
Finallly arrival to local Wine House in Kakhetian village where you will not only learn about Georgian wine history and making process while visiting Wine museum but as well will participate in masterclasses of baking Kakhetian bread in a very special way and making traditional Georgian sweets, called churchkhela. This delicacy, originated from Kakheti region and made from nuts (usually walnuts) and grape juice, is very popular in all the Georgia and nowadays proudly called Georgian snickers. And of-course, program includes tasting of local wines and traditional lunch from fresh local products.In the evening back to Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Day 4. On the way to Zugdidi

Head to Samegrelo region (Western Georgia). On the way stop at Jvari monastery (UNESCO) which covers impressive views to two rivers – Mtkvari and Aragvi – confluence and Mtskheta town, after drive down to visit Mtksheta itself Mtskheta (UNESCO) – ancient capital of Georgian Iberia Kingdom and the most religious city of Georgia as it is the place where Christianity in Georgia takes its origin and here is located one of the most important churches in all of the Georgia – Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. After excursion in Mtskheta you will be invited at local family-owned hotel for a masterclass of most popular Georgian meal – khinkali – a kind of dumpling, made of dough, stuffed with meat filling. Originated in the Georgian mountain regions of Pshavi, Mtiuleti and Khevsureti, it spread all over the country and no doubts deserved to be called the King of Georgian cuisine. Although making of it needs a long practice, during this masterclass you will get basic skills which most probably you will improve back at home. After tasting of your made khinkali continuing the way. Arrival to Zugdidi – center of Samegrelo region. Sightseeing. Overnight in Zugdidi.

Day 5. The taste of Samegrelo region

Excursion in Samegrelo region: Martvili Canyon, Nokalakevi archeological site. Arrival to Chkhoria village. Here you will be guests at traditional Megrelian house, where you will get closer to villagers life, explore their routine, make and taste their dishes. Samegrelo region is unique for their own language, quite strict traditions, beautiful nature, fields of hazelnuts and of course – exceptional cuisine. Megrelians are being proud for their spicy hot food and such typically Megrelian dishes like Megrelian Khachapuri (bread with cheese), ghomi (corn porridge), elarji (corn porridge with cheese), gebjalia (cheese with mint in matsoni (sour yogurt) sauce), Megrelian kharcho (beef meat in walnuts or hazelnuts sauce). During the masterclass local lady will teach you the secrets of making some unique megrelian meals! After all you will taste them and other dishes during unforgettable traditional dinner accompanied with Megrelian folk music and dances. Overnight in Zugdidi.

Day 6. Svaneti – one of the most beautiful mountainous region in Georgia

Head to Mestia – centre of mountainous Svaneti region. Svaneti is famous for its amazing mountainous nature, unique architecture, language, traditions, very strong character local people (better do not argue with Svans!) and of course – food. As mountainous people they eat lots of meat, potatoes, cheese. The main dishes which every Svan is proud of: Kubdari (pie with meat), Tashmijabi (mashed potatoes with cheese), Chijdvari (corn bread with cheese) and of course very famous – Svanetian salt, it‘s seasoning from various mountainous herbs, very flavorful and universal. After sightseeing of Mestia you will be hosted at locals house and start masterclasses of Svanetian meals some of unique Svanetian dishes. It‘s a time to get to know more about daily life of people in this region. Later tasting what you made during the dinner. Overnight in Mestia.

Day 7. Ushguli – the highest inhabited place in Europe

After breakfast jeep tour to Ushguli (for extra fee – ~ 20 EUR per person). Ushguli (2200 m)– is one of the highest inhabited places in Europe (after Bochorma, Tusheti, Georgia.) Enjoy mountainous views, visit old mountainous villages, see their architecture and meet locals. In the evening back to Mestia. Dinner and overnight.

Day 8. Mestia- Sataplia-Kutaisi

After breakfast drive down to Kutaisi. On the way visit Sataplia National Nature Reserve to explore underground world in Prometheus Cave – the walking route of 1420 meters opens the beauty of nature in the dark: wonders made by stalactites-stalagmites, flowing rivers and crystalline lakes. Arrival to Kutaisi – one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, as archaeological evidence indicates that the city functioned as the capital of the kingdom of Colchis in the sixth to fifth centuries BC. Sightseeing, visit to Bagrati Cathedral (UNESCO). Overnight in Kutaisi.

Day 9. Not a boring trip back to Tbilisi

After breakfast drive back to Tbilisi, excursions on the way: Gori – the place of Stalin birth, short stop at his birth house and railway carriage he travelled to Yalta Conference (optional excursion to Stalin museum, for additional fee ~ 4 EUR/pax); later drive to Uplistsikhe cave town which is considered as one of the oldest urban settlements in Georgia, as its begins in the I-II millennium B.C. Back to Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Our evening recommendation – relax in ancient sulfuric once beloved by literature classics Aleksander Pushkin and Aleksander Duma. There is a saying – if you haven’t been in Tbilisi baths means you haven’t been in Tbilisi. You can order a pot of tea or…massage and have a good time with your friends in a separate bath room (1 hour per room costs about 20-50 EUR).
